We are breeding Traditional Hereford cattle, of which there are only a few hundred left in the country, and yes Herefords are available everywhere, but not the traditional ones. The larger ones you see nowadays have been crossed with Canadian blood and are heavier and taller though not necessarily with better conformation. The Traditional Herefords are ideal for conservation grazing as they do not damage the ground and allow wild flowers to flourish. These beautiful animals are very docile which makes them easy to handle, they don't need to be pumped full of cererals and will finish on grass in the summer and haylage or silage in the winter. With oil prices rising this means the cereal for animal feed is costing more to produce and with this in mind some farmers are starting to look at the native breeds. The lamb is from Oxford Down sheep of which there are only about 700 ewes left in UK. The pork is from British Lops which are the rarest native breed pig. The rare chickens we have are Marsh Daisy (rarest), Ixworth, Cornish Indian Game, and Scots Grey which provide some of the eggs for our shop. We also have crosses of Rhode Island Red, Black Rock, Amber Star and Bluebell which lay the majority of our organic eggs.
